mld, September 8, 2002 at 9:55:00 AM CESTCassandra, Confirmed A while back, I wrote an entry about the likelihood of a dirty bomb attack on the US. My basic point was that such an attack was unstoppable, given the present state of US border security, and a sophisticated and determined foe. Turns out the latter isn't needed. Even some journalists can do it. Some folks from ABC news were able to move fifteen pounds of depleted uranium over several national borders and into the US. While this substance is not considered to be harmful (unless it's used in projectile weapons) it presents a radiation signature similar to a mass of shielded active uranium. In other words, if they could get this stuff into the country, they could get the dirty bomb fixins in, too. The full report is here. This would be an excellent example of why just "playing defense" will not work, and why we must destroy regimes that aid and abet terrorism before we suffer any more catastrophic attacks. ... [If Saddam Hussein] "fails to comply [with U.N. inspections], and we fail to act, or we take some ambiguous third route which gives him yet more opportunities to develop his program of weapons of mass destruction and continue to press for the release of the sanctions and continue to ignore the solemn commitments that he made? Well, he will conclude that the international community has lost its will. He will then conclude that he can go right on and do more to rebuild an arsenal of devastating destruction... If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow... Some day, some way, I guarantee you, he'll use the arsenal." . . . . . . . . . . . . (almost there) . . . . . . . . . . Bill Clinton, February 18, 1998. Thanks to Sully for the heads-up. ... Link (6 comments) ... Comment mld, September 8, 2002 at 5:17:00 AM CEST Running Ducks, Cooking Cats I'm still getting a lot of hits from some German-speaking folks accessing the pages about the adopted kitties. The page has lots of comments. Unable to make heads or tails of the German, I decided to let Google translate the page for me. Still gobbledygook. But there are some interesting sentences... "I would take goats and run ducks also, although one cannot take also in the bed." ""Cats cook no coffee and do not bring also the newspaper to the bed." And my favorite... "Because of the women one must shave oneself here continuously." ... Link (0 comments) ... Comment ... Next page
